Women In Reliquaries
A gendered comparison of the portrayals of men and women in Catholic reliquaries throughout the medieval period.
Overview

An Introduction:
Reliquaries are the containers for relics, or sacred objects. While the objects themselves might be basic or even disgusting, reliquaries provide any extravagance a relic might lack. This website examines the ways men and women are depicted differently on reliquaries, and whether the reliquaries housing relics of male and female saints significantly diverge.
Archival Considerations

Archival Theory
Most archival work is conducted through the examination of documents, not objects. Accordingly, this project aims to not only display research findings, but also to go into some depth creating a new theory of how objects can be viewed as archival material, and to what extent the spaces in which they reside can be considered archives.
